Deep vein thrombosis

Firstly thrombus means blood clot forming in the vessels. When the blood clot forms in the deep veins in the body like thighs, legs, arms, etc. Such condition is called deep vein thrombosis. Usually lower limbs are mostly affected.
Symptoms
  • Due to obstruction caused by the blood clot, pain in the affected limb persists.

  • Feeling of warmth in the affected area than other parts.
  • If the affected part is arm, then there will be pain in the arm, shoulder, hand. Swelling of the arm and weakness persists. Neck and shoulder are also affected sometimes.
Causes
Blood clot in the veins preventing circulation to the parts leads to deep vein thrombosis. But blood clot is caused due to several reasons like-
  • Reduced movement of parts both upper and lower limbs. Due to reduced mobility to the parts there is stagnation of blood causing the blood to clot. This is mostly seen in individuals who have a sedentary occupation.
  • Injury to the blood vessels or surgical procedures damage the vessels and develop blood clots. Healing of the blood vessels also may form blood clots.
  • Individuals who are diabetic, high cholesterol levels and hypertensive have high risk of develop deep vein thrombosis.
Being obese or overweight, smokers and alcoholic are at high risk to develop deep vein thrombosis.
Complications
Deep vein thrombosis is associated with severe complication i.e. pulmonary embolism.
Embolism is the term used when the blood clot which is stationary cuts off from that area and become mobile. Blood clots during circulatory process moves along with blood and gets obstructed. When this blood clot blocks the lung severe life threatening complications called pulmonary embolism occurs.
Chest pain, shortness of breath, light headedness and coughing up of blood occurs.
Care and management
  • Avoid sitting for longer duration or bedridden individuals are advised to change positions often.
  • Physical activity is necessary which lowers the risk of blood clot formation.
  • Life style changes like losing weight and quitting smoke can help
  • Compression stockings helps to prevent swelling of lower limbs.
