Dehydration

Dehydration occurs due to loss of fluid from the body or when the body doesn’t get enough amount of water and other fluids to maintain the normal functions.
Causes
  • Excessive diarrhoea and vomiting.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Fevers like viral, bacterial, dengue, etc. there may be loss of fluid.
  • Diabetic individuals loose lot of fluids in the form of polyuria, this is mostly neglected in the elderly people.
  • Athletes loose fluids in the form of sweat, this should be balanced by drinking adequate quantities of water. If not there may be high risk of leading to shock and death.
Symptoms
  • Excessive thirst.
  • Dry mouth
  • Weakness and lethargy
  • Decreased urination
  • Dark concentrated urination
  • Dizziness and confusion
  • Less frequent urination
  • Sunken eyes and face
  • In infants, anterior fontanelle becomes sunken or deep set is seen if there is dehydration.
  • And also infants become irritable and excessive crying is seen.
  • Rapid breathing, low blood pressure and rapid heart rate is seen when there is severe dehydration.
Management
  • Water should be consumed in small quantities at shorter intervals. Besides this oral electrolytes can also be given.
  • Excessive exercise should be halted for some time.
  • Intravenous fluids should be given if necessary.
  • Body needs more quantities of water during fever, as a body’s mechanism the heat which is produced is cooled by excessive sweating. And the individual will have excessive thirst. This excess sweating should be balanced either by drinking excess water or giving oral electrolytes or intravenous fluids.

Complications
Due to excessive dehydration there can be many life threatening complications like seizures, low blood volume, stroke, kidney failure and coma. Ultimately may even cause shock and death.
Homeopathic approach
Water consumption is should be proper or in severe dehydration with complications, intra vascular saline is must to compensate electrolyte imbalance. Based on the causative factors dehydration can be check mate. Dehydration caused due to excessive diarrhea and vomiting, remedies like Nux vom, Ars alb, Ipecac are given. There is more loss of fluid during fever, so remedies like Ferrum phos and Eupatorium are helpful in lowering the temperature and preventing dehydration as well. Natrum mur and Kali mur are helpful in balancing the electrolytes. We at Gouri Homeo Healthway see that the remedies are given to balance the electrolytes and hence dehydration is reduced.
