Take care Anaemia is debilitating but with the right diet it can be avoided
If one is tired on least exertion, feels short of breath
even on climbing a set of stairs or there is palpitation or a sense of
their own heartbeat thumping in the chest during daily chores and a
sort of dizziness the first thing your physician would do is not look
for any organic disease but to check for the levels of haemoglobin and
red blood cells. A check up for anaemia. In a third world country like
ours it is not a surprise that it can affect about 30 per cent of the
people. Needless to stay it is the poor and least educated who are the
most vulnerable.
Anaemia means a deficiency of red blood cells. It is these
cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to all the tissues of the body
wherein there is combustion of sugar and fat to produce energy. The
active content of these cells, haemoglobin binds with oxygen for this
purpose but when there is a deficiency the active content is
insufficient to clear out the waste substance, carbon dioxide and gel
with the active content that is oxygen.
Anaemia could be due to insufficient dietary intake of
iron, increased demand in circumstances like pregnancy, blood loss in
diseases like peptic ulcer, piles, cancer etc. and also if the iron
stores in the body are not utilised properly in diseases like kidney
failure, rheumatoid arthritis etc.
The essential element for formation of blood products is
Vitamin B12. This could occur due to insufficient intake of this
element or if it is not properly assimilated by the body due to lack of
specific factor of absorption in diseases like Crohn’s disease.
Similarly too folic acid is required for the same purpose.
Anaemia is also found in instances where there is a
physical change in the size of blood cells like haemolytic anaemia or
due to genetic variations causing Thalassaemia etc. Or a situation not
so common though is aplastic anaemia wherein the marrow is not geared
enough to the task of demands of blood cells or is brought down due to
conditions like irradiation, medication etc.
Chest pain, headache and pain in the lower limbs as if a
sort of tiredness are also the other symptoms. Reduced sense of taste,
symptoms of nervous system and psychological symptoms can make
themselves felt.
Dietary intake needs to be improved and iron-rich foods
like cereals, broccoli, spinach, whole-wheat bread, fresh green leafy
vegetables, dry, fruits eggs need to be taken more often. Liver, fish
and eggs are good sources of Vitamin B12. Vegetarians can find B12 in
yeast extracts. Folic acid is found in green leafy vegetables. It is
also a fact even when the best of supplements are given there is not
much of a change in the condition.
