Cradle cap

It is the crust formation on baby’s scalp with oily scaly patches. Infants are affected mostly. In this condition usually the skin doesn’t itch or be painful. Thick scaly patches are formed. This is also known as infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It usually affects scalp but can also affect eyebrows, ears and nose. These scaly patches are difficult to remove and are thick yellow or white in colour.
Usually these patches clear up in few days on its own but can persists for a while.
Symptoms
  • Scaly patches on scalp.
  • Oily skin with yellow or white flakes.
  • Skin flakes.
  • Thick crust formation which are difficult to remove.
  • Itching of the scalp is usually absent.
Prevention and Management
  • Massaging the baby’s scalp with oil regularly with gentle hands as the crusts are difficult to remove.
  • Regular shampooing so that the flakes which comes off while massaging are cleared easily and also prevents infections to other parts.
  • Do not rub the scalp. Gentle touch helps.
Homeopathic approach
Thick crust formation on scalp with oozing of liquid can be reduced with homeopathic medication. Remedies like Borax and Vinca minor are helpful in reducing the crust formation. Graphites helps when the fluid formed is sticky. Petroleum helps to restore the healthy skin. Antim crud is best suited for thick dirty skin with scabs.
