Fractures

A fracture is a thin crack of bone to complete break of bone. Fracture can be due to injury or fall or accident. Bone can fracture in lengthwise, crosswise, into number of pieces and at multiple places in a single bone. 
Symptoms
  • Pain due to injury. Pain worse at least touch or movement.
  • Swelling at the site of injury.
  • Redness and bruising at the site of injury.
  • Deformity can be visible in some cases.
  • Sometimes if the fracture is severe, the broken bone may poke through the skin.
There are different types of fractures which include open vs closed fracture and incomplete vs complete fracture. 
Open fractures are severe in nature and the broken bone tear the skin. The internal parts are exposed and this makes vulnerable for infections. Closed fractures are simple fractures which doesn’t break through the skin. 
Incomplete fractures are that where the bone doesn’t break completely. Slight crack in the bone is seen. On the contrary in complete fracture the bone breaks completely. Displaced fracture, single fracture, compression fracture are common types in complete fractures.
Causes
Fall from height, injuries, direct blow or hit to hard surfaces, accidental injuries can cause fractures.
Besides these children who have poor absorption of calcium have delicate bones that cause easy fractures of bone. In elderly due to low calcium levels, osteoporosis is common among them, due to which elderly are more vulnerable for fractures.
Osteogenesis imperfecta is a disorder that results in fragile bones that break due to slightest movement. This is mostly present since birth. This disease is also called as brittle bone disease.
Management
Hospitalisation is necessary for severe fractures like open fractures and completes fractures.
Individual who have displaced bone fractures firstly the displaced bone is corrected and placed in proper position then supportive measures are given.
Rest is more important and movement of fracture bone should be done with utmost care so that healing could be fast.
Surgical intervention is must for open fractures.
